Dichroic Glass

What is dichroic glass jewelry?

Dichroic, dicro or dichro glass which ever you prefer, is glass with a special surface coating.  Developed by NASA for use in satellite mirrors, dichro is composed of multiple microscopic thin layers of metal such as gold, silver, and titanium deposited on the surface of glass. This coating when fused will transmit its cuurent color to a completely different one when the fusing process is completed.  Depending on the coating applied certain wavelengths of light pass through while others are reflected. This results in an array of colors being displayed that varies with the angle from which it is viewed.

Dichroic glass is coated on either clear or black glass. The availablity of different coatings is ever growing.

There is also dichroic slide that the artist can arrange on mutliple pieces of glass for another array of colors and depth.

With this in mind, the combinations and how the artist brings them together are seemingly endless.

Because of these transitions, dichroc glass is a new age medium for creating eye catching fused glass jewelry.
